Learning how to Carve a Pumpkin
Yes, I do know how to carve a pumpkin, so the title is a tiny bit misleading. But do I know how to carve a pumpkin well? Not really. So off I went to the internet, searching how to take pumpkin carving to the next level, and the main tip across multiple sites, was to add depth into the pieces. This was achieved by only carving the top layer of the pumpkin and still leaving the flesh intact, so when lit up, multiple tones were created, rather than the typical 2.
The image seen on the left, was just done with a knife (it looks a bit more messy and less percise), however the one on the right was done with lino tools (a lot cleaner and nicer lines).
If you want to take your pumpkin carving to the next level, I do recommend buying a lino cutter. I do this the lino cutter did also lend itself well this design in particular, ‘Starry night’ by Vincent van Gogh.
Every year I do try to be better and outshine the one before, by trying new techniques or a different size pumpkin to push myself: and I think this is what art is about, always trying to push yourself, and even if it goes wrong, you can always try again and again till it goes right.
